Amazon Manufacturing Engineer, Kuiper Payload Processing Facility in Merritt Island, Florida

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

The success of Kuiper depends on the quality, reliability, cost, integration, throughput, and security of the products delivered. It is a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As part of the Kuiper team, you will solve difficult problems where resolutions have high impact, and help create a brand new set of launch site processes and standards. To be successful you need to be highly motivated and detail oriented while maintaining the highest standards of execution.

Key job responsibilities

The Manufacturing Engineer will lead a team of technicians through satellite receiving and electrical checkout operations and will support other final assembly and integration activities. This individual will work closely with other launch operations and satellite manufacturing teams.

The Manufacturing Engineer implements test requirements, designs and establishes the payload processing facility receiving and electrical checkout work cell, supports facility and equipment planning, authors procedures, implements process controls, and supports continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical and collaborative setting and is able to interpret technical requirements and turn them into actionable steps.

Key job responsibilities

•Planning workstation layouts for satellite receiving and electrical checkout, optimized to eventually reach the planned processing rate

•Planning material flow and implementing manufacturing processes for satellite receiving and electrical checkout

•Receiving satellites at the launch site

•Performing electrical checkout on received satellites

•Continuously improving receiving and electrical checkout and test processes

•Interfacing with facilities personnel to set up and work within a payload processing facility

•Evaluating and improving takt time

•Authoring and implementing work instructions and standard processes

•Resolving anomalies and implementing corrective actions

•Operations will occur primarily on first shift, Monday-Friday but off-shift and weekend work may be required depending on production/launch schedules

•Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

A day in the life

The receiving and electrical checkout Manufacturing Engineer will spend the majority of their day on the shop floor leading their team through satellite offload, receiving and electrical checkout operations. They will work with other engineering teams, quality, and manufacturing teams to set up and maintain the electrical checkout equipment. They will address root cause of failures and issues, and implement production control and optimization strategies. They will implement engineering best practices in a safe and repeatable manner, implement efficiency improvements and reduce non-conformances.

The receiving and electrical checkout Manufacturing Engineer will have experience in space hardware integration and test, with particular focus on electrical testing and harnessing.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, physics, material science or other related discipline, or relevant experience

  • 2+ years’ experience in developing or working with integrated electrical systems

  • 4+ years of experience with developing space electrical or mechanical assemblies

  • 2+ years’ experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Passport

  • Ability and willingness to comply with the Government of French Guiana which mandates that travelers receive vaccinations for yellow fever and COVID-19

  • Ability to pass Kennedy Space Center background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production

  • Experienced with various automated manufacturing processes, including assembly and test methods at component level, subsystem, and system level

  • Experienced with handling and tracking systems for continuous material flow to manufacturing lines

  • Highly familiar with QTP/ATP and production test methods, and automated data acquisition and collection

  • Formal training/certification in Operational

  • Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.) a plus

  • Strong organizational, analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

  • Able to stand for long periods of time and perform repetitive assembly operation

  • Able to climb up and down ladders, work in tight spaces, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position

  • Able to lift at least 25 lbs. unassisted
